The EDD can be a good source of information and free training, but the most important thing is, as soon as you get laid off from work, on that day, go and apply for unemployment benefits. You paid into it and you deserve some of it back, so apply for what was taken out of your check and already belongs to you.
If you wait to apply, your time for getting benefits will take at least two to three weeks from the date of application. Your previous employer should provide you with contact information, otherwise look in the Yellow Pages.
Visit your local EDD office and see what they have to offer.
