One of the first things you want to
do is a develop a plan for finding your next job. The following are a few
things you should consider:
- Get on the internet and start with
Hotjobs.com,
Dice,
Craigslist,
Monster, Brassring
and a few others. Submit
your information to these job sites.
- If you want to pay for it, you can blast
your resume for a price and all the websites above will give you that opportunity,
if you want it. We are not sure about the success rate. See Writing Your
Resume tab for one of many places to blast your resume.
- Obviously check your local newspapers
and also check newspapers of another area, if you want to move.
- Call your friends, hook up with some professional
organizations that are located in the SQA
Information Assistance tab. Bottom line is network
wherever you can and ask for contacts or suggestions for agencies and job
shops that may be helpful
- Start searching for job fairs in your
area. Some of these can be found through professional organizations in your
area (see above). Register and submit your resume on-line.
- If you can, follow-up on your resume and
call the people you submitted to.
- Keep a running spreadsheet of everyone
and everywhere you have sent your resume for two reasons. Number one is
you will not duplicate your efforts and number two is it will be good records
to keep, if you are collecting unemployment benefits.
- Now may be an opportunity to rethink your
profession or a take a temporary detour. Make a list of all the thinks you
like to do and a list of your experience, maybe something will pop out at
you and you just might make a career change. There are some good books out
there on careers and one of them is "What Color Is Your Parachute".
- Maybe now is the time to go back to school
or learn something you always wanted to do or increase your job skills while
you are job shopping. There are many inexpensive courses you can take in
your community or sign up for some on-line courses.
- If you still have not found anything,
look for something else, until things brighten up and they will sooner or
later. Also re-evaluate your financial status and make some changes, if
possible.
- Do not ever give up and surround yourself
with positive friends and family for emotional support. Get up in the morning,
take a nice shower and start every day like it is a new day.
